Passport to the World Concert Series

The Passport Festival is a unique series that celebrates the music and dance of cultures around the world featuring traditional music and dance bands along with fusion bands and contemporary artists that draw inspiration from world music.
Every weekend in January we'll feature different groups representing cultures all around the globe. We kick off January 7th with Veronneau, blending of bossa nova, jazz, samba and swing! The festival also includes performances by Hot Club of Baltimore, 11 yr old Bolivian pianist Jose Andre, Brazilian vocalist Cissa Paz, Celtic band IONA, the Mark G. Meadows Quintet, and so many more! Veronneau
January 7 at 7:30PM WAMMY Award Winning international acoustic quartet VERONNEAU has captivated festival, concert hall and jazz club audiences across North America and Europe with their vocal and guitar based world-jazz. A delicious blend of bossa nova, jazz, samba and swing performed in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Based in Washington DC, Veronneau has attracted capacity crowds to venues such as the Kennedy Center, Strathmore, and Blues Alley. Featuring musicians from Canada, UK and USA, Veronneau's international tours, radio and internet airplay have won them world-wide fans. |
José André
January 8th at 7:00PM 11 year old José André Montaño is a jazz pianist and composer. Born blind in Cochabamba, Bolivia, he taught himself how to play piano from a very young age. His playful and inspired compositions bridges Jazz, Rock, Blues, Bossa Nova, Latin American Folklore, and World music. He is a musician who flavors his tunes with Latin rhythms and jazz harmonies. Despite his very young age he has already delighted audiences from prestigious festivals in Rome, La Paz, London and concert halls across America including Washington D.C.s Kennedy Center, Millennium stage. |
IONA
January 13th at 7:30PM IONA's music is a unique, acoustic weave of the traditional music of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany (France), the Isle of Man, Asturies and Galicia (Spain), as well as their transplants in America. Blending songs, dance tunes, and aires into a rich and stunning tapestry, their style is outstanding in an arena where these traditions are seldom intertwined. IONA is known for toe tapping dances, haunting songs, and the humor of the Celtic peoples. All of the band members play multiple instruments pursuing complex rhythms with deft professionalism. IONA’s performances are fun and interactive so come ready to learn a new song and clap along! |
Brazil Passion
January 14th at 7:30PM Don’t miss this Creative Cauldron exclusive featuring samba, bossa, choro, and the regional flavors of Brazil from DC's finest Brazilian vocalists and dancers. Let's celebrate carnival and explore the richness and variety of the country's musical tapestry and history. Featuring Cissa Paz (DC Jazz festival vocalist and a hit at last year’s Passport) plus the recording artist, Kenia Acioly, and Musical Director Pablo de Oliveira. limited table availability |

Dr. Jim Thorne, a real space scientist and singer/songwriter, will take you and the kids on a musical journey from the historic Apollo moon program all the way to the stars. Hear the stories of Tommy and Laura, two young space explorers who return to the moon and go beyond. Be ready for some questions about space science - you just might learn something! Hot Club of Baltimore
January 15th at 7:00PM A big success at last year’s Passport to the World, The Hot Club of Baltimore has quickly become the premier Django Reinhardt style swing band, touring throughout the United States. Alexis Tantau adds her captivating vocals to the group in both French and English. She has the rare ability to deliver the lyrical content of a song with theatrical presence using her voice as an instrument which holds equal footing with the other musicians during solo exchanges. |
Songs of Protest, Songs of Triumph with Shenandoah Run and Guests
January 20th at 7:30 pm Creative Cauldron welcomes back Shenandoah Run for a special concert that celebrates the power of folk music and the healing power of art to bring people together. Let yourself be lured into a sing along with this talented nine piece folk ensemble as they perform songs that galvanized a generation, and profoundly changed the course of history at another time of deep division in our country. With their top notch musicianship and passionate performance, Shenandoah Run may just help us find some harmony. Special Note to Singer Songwriters who are feeling inspired to share an original contemporary song of protest, or song of triumph over hatred and injustice. January 22th at 7:00 PM The star of Signature’s Jelly’s Last Jam comes to Creative Cauldron with his acclaimed Quintet. Jazz composer, pianist, vocalist, collaborator, recording artist, teacher—and now actor—Mark G. Meadows is a man on a mission: to create a unifying sound that breaks through social barriers. There’s something for everyone in his music, which harmonizes pop, gospel, R&B, hip hop, funk, and jazz. With his lyrics, suffused with meaning, and his velvet voice, Meadows cuts through the noise to speak to all! |
Words & Music, "Jukebox Romance"
January 27th at 7:30PM The talented vocal ensemble, Words and Music, featuring Melissa Coombs (Soprano), Patrick Cooke (Tenor), Kyle Engler (Mezzo-Soprano), William Heim (Baritone) and musicians Virginia Sircy (Piano), Eric Seay (Bass), will bring their new, fun filled concert of love songs through the ages to Creative Cauldron. Using Schumann’s Spanisches Liederspiel as a framework, "Jukebox Romance" weaves together tunes from the art song, musical theater, and the American songbook! You can even help select the tunes you want to hear, just like a jukebox! |
Dave Kline
January 28th at 7:30PM In 2002, Dave Kline formed the Dave Kline Band, a Washington, D.C. based group recognized for its vibrant world sound. The Dave Kline Band blends the modern genres of rock, blues, jazz and folk with music from the ancient cultures such as Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America. Currently a 4 piece ensemble with electric violin, electric guitar, bass and drums, the band presents an exciting new sound with all original instrumentals. The combustion of high energy original instrumentals, creates a deep emotional impact with the audience. |
Anacostia Delta Story-Tellers Concert
January 29th at 7:00PM Enjoy a night in the company of musicians Dave Chappell, Anthony Pirog, John Previti and Barry Hart - stars of the new movie Anacostia Delta: Home of the World's Great "Unknown" Guitarists, a documentary about DC guitarists Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan. These great musicians tell stories and play the music of their days with the legendary Telecaster Masters of DC, keeping alive the intoxicating mix of blues, jazz and country music that they played... a sound recognized around the world as truly unique. |
