Creative Cauldron Arts Adventure Camp FAQ Sheet

How should my child prepare for camp each day?

At Arts Adventure Camp we have a physically active schedule and lots of outdoor classroom time as well as indoor, so it’s important to have your child do the following:

  •         Apply sunscreen and bug spray liberally before coming to camp

  •         Wear comfortable clothes that can get messy on nature walks and in art classes

  •  Wear close-toed shoes or sneakers.  Please NO SANDALS or FLIP FLOPS.

What should my child bring to camp each day?

Because we move around a good deal, backpacks are the most efficient way to keep everything in one place.  Here’s a checklist for your child’s backpack each day:

  •         Morning Snack and lunch

  •         Bathing Suit and Towel LABELED WITH THEIR NAME

  •        Water Bottle WE REFILL REGULARLY SO IT DOESN’T NEED TO BE LARGE

  •        Any medicine needed by camper (This should be clearly noted on Health History Form)

  •        Lots of imagination!!!

What is the daily schedule of activities that my child will participate in?

  •        Our days begin (at 9:00 am) and end (at 3:30pm) with what we call a “cauldron.”  This group gathering of the entire camp ensemble gives campers a chance to share individual ideas, songs, poems, etc that they may not have had the opportunity to share during the regular camp day.  It helps build rapport and community.

  •        Beginning at 9:30 am, campers will be engaged in 40-minute segments of creative drama, music and movement. Some sessions will be held indoors in our home at ArtSpace Falls Church (410 S. Maple Avenue) and some will be held outdoors in nearby Cavalier Trail or Big Chimneys Park.  Our professional teaching artists with the aid of an associate producer (our term for counselor) and one or two junior producers will lead these sessions.

  •        We break for lunch at 12 noon. Lunch is usually one half hour with sometimes a little extra free time on the playground.

  •          Afternoon segments start at 12:30 pm and include visual arts and craft activities (every day), swimming (usually twice a week), trail hikes at local parks, visits to the library and other special field trips and activities.  Each camp has a specific focus or stated theme that will guide these activities.

Who are the faculty for Arts Adventure Camp and what is their training?

Creative Cauldron has an amazing team of professional teaching artists who work with us each year.  Their bios are easily available on our website in the “About Us” section under Artistic Circle.  Guest faculty will also be included throughout the summer, and our field trips include visits with trained naturalists at local parks.

Make sure you get to know your child’s Associate Producer as well.  We have an exceptional support staff of caring and nurturing young people.   They will deal with any special needs that your camper might have throughout the session.

What is the supervisory ratio for campers?

One staff member for every eight campers ages 6 to 8, one for every 10 campers ages 9 to 14.  For groups with children younger than 6 we have at least one additional staff member present with them at all times.

Where do you swim?

We now swim at the pool at the Lee Square Apartments.  This is a small private pool with an excellent management and lifeguard staff.  They are strict about enforcing rules and help us keep this a fun and safe activity each year.

My child doesn’t know how to swim; will he/she be safe at the pool?

Your permission form requires that you let us know about the swimming level of your child, and this helps us with supervision at the pool.  Non-swimmers remain in the shallow end of the pool. Each camper will be given a swim test by the lifeguard on the first day of swimming.  Lee Square does permit flotation devices and vests if you want to send them with a non-swimmer for extra protection.

How do you transport children to activities that happen off the premises?

Creative Cauldron engages Blue Ridge Limousine and Transportation Services for all afternoon trips and transports campers usually in 13 passenger mini-buses.  We have worked with Blue Ridge for the past eight years because they have well-trained and experienced drivers who are conscientious about the safety of our campers.

How do we reach you during camp hours?

Creative Cauldron’s main number is 571-239-5288.  If you can’t get through leave a message.  We check it frequently.
